Alex Belohlavek brings more than a decade of conducting and teaching experience to the podium. He is respected for his musicianship, technical skills, and leadership. Alex has taught and conducted in educational institutions from middle school through college, as well as sacred and community ensembles of all ages. He currently serves as Director of Choral Activities at Northwest Mississippi Community College, where he also teaches music theory, ear-training, and other academic coursework.
Alex hold a B.M. in Music Education from Susquehanna University, an M.M. in Choral Conducting from the University of Southern Mississippi, and a D.M.A. in Choral Music from the University of Southern California. He has conducted choirs and taught academic courses at the Jim Henson Academy of Visual & Performing Arts and the California School of the Arts. He has conducted youth ensembles at the National Children’s Chorus of Los Angeles, as well as chamber ensembles, recital choirs, the USC Thornton University Chorus, Apollo Chorus, and Concert Choir, as well as the University of Southern Mississippi Southern Chorale, Concert Choir, and Chamber Singers. In sacred settings, Alex has served both Christian and Jewish congregations as conductor and vocalist.
Alex brings an adventurous spirit to the podium and is passionate about new choral music, particularly multi-movement works by living composers. He has prepared and premiered music by Tõnu Kõrvits, Nico Muhly, Richard Burchard, and most recently, an eight-movement a cappella choral work titled Color All Maps New, by New Orleans composer Dylan Tran. Off the podium, Alex enjoys climbing and backpacking, and he feels most alive in the mountains.
