Alex Belohlavek, DMA
Conductor & Educator
Dr. Belohlavek serves as Director of Choral Activities at Northwest Mississippi Community College, leading a comprehensive and growing program of four ensembles, ~60 students, and ten vocal music majors. He conducts the acclaimed Ranger Chorale and Ranger Consort, both recognized for their excellent performances, with earned invitations to regional and national performances. He also teaches music theory and aural skills.
With more than a decade of experience across collegiate, secondary, sacred, and community choir settings, Alex is known for combining artistic excellence with a science-informed approach to choral pedagogy. His research explores the intersection of vocology, learning theory, and rehearsal design. As an advocate for new music, Alex recently commissioned and premiered Color All Maps New, an eight-movement a cappella masterwork by Dylan Tran.
Alex holds a B.M. in Music Education from Susquehanna University, an M.M. in Choral Conducting from the University of Southern Mississippi, and a D.M.A. in Choral Music from the University of Southern California. Off the podium, he enjoys backpacking, climbing, and thru-hiking in the mountains.
From liberal arts to R1 institutions, youth choirs to community chorus, education is my philosophy.
I’m passionate about teaching people—not just to be musicians, but to think like musicians.

Off the podium, I’m usually climbing or backpacking.
Equally at home on the podium and in the wilderness, I strive to bring a sense of adventure to music-making.
